Avro Viewer and Avro to JSON

Avro files carry their own schema and pack records in compressed blocks, as Kafka Connect, Hadoop and BigQuery exports write them. Drop one into Bracely to read the records as JSON and see the writer's schema, without installing avro-tools.

How do I use the Avro viewer?

  1. Drop a .avro file anywhere in Bracely: up to 50 MB it opens as a JSON array in a new tab.
  2. For a bigger file, or to filter, use Big files: its summary includes the writer's schema, and jq runs on every record.
  3. Download the records as JSON Lines or a JSON array.

What does the Avro viewer do?

  • Null, deflate, Snappy and Zstandard codecs
  • Records, enums, arrays, maps, unions and fixed
  • Logical types: decimal, uuid, date, time and timestamps (ms, µs, ns)
  • 64-bit longs exact to the last digit
  • Bytes and fixed as Base64
  • Damaged or cut-off blocks reported with their position

Frequently asked questions

Which Avro files does it read?
Object container files (.avro), the format with the schema in the header. Single records without a header, as in a Kafka message, need their schema to read, so they aren't supported yet.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Bracely's own Avro reader runs in your browser and nothing leaves your device.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Bracely runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you paste or open leaves your device.
